Medicare Supplement Plan Comparison

Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap policies, offer supplemental coverage to fill gaps in Original Medicare. Sold by private insurance companies, these plans help cover costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments.

What Are The Different Medicare Supplement Plans?

Depending on where you live, you may have up to 10 different Medicare Supplement plans to choose from. Those plans include Medigap Plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

All Medicare Supplement plans offer the same basic benefits:

  • Coverage for Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Coverage for the Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Coverage for the first three pints of blood used in a procedure
  • Coverage for your Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment

Some plans also cover some or all of the following:

  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charge
  • 80% of foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits).

Here’s how each plan’s coverage compares with each other:

Medigap A covers full basic benefits only.

Medigap B covers full basic benefits as well as the Part A deductible.

Medigap C covers full basic benefits, skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, Part A deductible, Part B deductible, and 80% of foreign travel emergencies.

Medigap D covers full basic benefits, skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, Part A deductible, and 80% of foreign travel emergencies.

Medigap F covers full basic benefits, skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, Part A deductible, Part B deductible, Part B excess charges, and 80% of foreign travel emergencies.

How To Choose Between Medicare Supplement Plans

With so many options, it can feel difficult to choose the right Medicare Supplement plan for your needs. But with the right plan, you get the coverage and financial protection that’s right for you. Consider the following points in deciding on a plan:

  • The costs for each plan (make sure you look at how each plan is “rated” or priced to get a full understanding of the true cost to you)
  • The types of medical care you usually receive and the types of medical care you think you’ll need in the future
  • How much medical care you typically receive as well as how much medical care you think you’ll need in the future
  • Your comfort with a cost-sharing model versus a full coverage model
  • Your plans for travel throughout your retirement
