Medicare Advantage Enrollment
If you’re already enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and B) but you’re interested in having more coverage, a Medicare Advantage plan is an option to consider. But, before you can join a Medicare Advantage plan, there are a few things you should know.
Requirements
To join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must first be enrolled in Original Medicare. Once you are, you can begin comparing plans in your area. Coastal Insurance Planning can always help with this process to make it easier for you to know your options.
Keep in mind though, that you can only enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if you live within the plan’s service area.
Enrollment Periods
There are several enrollment periods you can take advantage of to join a Medicare Advantage plan. The first enrollment period is the Initial Enrollment Period. This period is seven months long and starts three months before your 65th birthday month. This is the first enrollment period that comes available to those who are newly eligible for Medicare.
The second enrollment period is the Annual Enrollment Period, but to use this period, you must already have Medicare. During this period, which starts on October 15 and ends December 7, you can switch, join, or drop a plan. For example, if you’re currently enrolled in just Original Medicare, you can use this period to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Then, your coverage with your new plan will start on January 1.
Another period you can take advantage of after you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. This period starts on January 1 and ends March 31. You can use this period to switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or switch back to Original Medicare.
